AI isn’t a technology decision. It’s a strategic one. The companies that treat it that way will redefine their industries. The ones that don’t will be redefined by them.”
Peter helps middle-market leaders navigate complexity, anticipate disruption, and make strategic decisions that position their organizations for long-term success.
As Managing Director, Strategy + Operations at Smith + Howard, Peter advises middle-market leaders in manufacturing, logistics, distribution, healthcare, and technology on how to anticipate and capitalize on disruptive shifts in their industries, competitive environments, and market position.
Today, nearly every strategy engagement Peter leads has artificial intelligence at its center. He helps clients assess their AI readiness, prioritize and sequence the use cases most likely to create enterprise value, and design the governance architecture required to deploy AI responsibly at scale. His work goes beyond implementation: Peter helps executives understand how AI is likely to reshape the way their companies create value for customers, from rethinking how a building-products leader’s field experts deliver consultative service to reimagining how an industrial manufacturer extracts insight from IoT-connected equipment. He authored the firm’s whitepaper, The Most Expensive Word in Wait: How Commander’s Intent Can Unlock Decisions at the Speed of AI, which examines why governance, not technology, is the most common point of failure in enterprise AI adoption.
Peter’s strategic lens was forged at the intersection of national security and corporate strategy. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy. He completed his active-duty service at the Pentagon while earning a Master’s in Strategic Intelligence, with a concentration in counterterrorism, from the National Intelligence University. As a civilian intelligence analyst, he provided intelligence support to Special Operations Forces and authored a number of pieces featured in the President’s Daily Brief. He left government service for the Strategy Practice of Deloitte Consulting before becoming CEO of a PE-backed boutique strategy firm, which he led through two successful exits.
