Lee Benson

Lee Benson is a Partner in the Tax group at Smith + Howard Advisory, LLC, bringing over two decades of deep expertise in tax accounting, financial reporting, and strategic tax planning. In September 2025, he joined Smith + Howard as part of the firm’s acquisition of Horton, Lee & Burnett — a move that significantly expanded Smith + Howard’s presence in the Southeastern United States.

Prior to the acquisition, Lee spent more than 20 years at Horton, Lee & Burnett, rising through roles of increasing responsibility. He served as Partner from 2015 through September 2025, and prior to that, as Tax Manager from 2001 to 2014. His long tenure demonstrates both technical depth and a consistent track record of delivering high-value solutions to clients in the areas of tax compliance, tax strategy, and financial accounting.

Lee is known for his collaborative leadership style, strong technical acumen, and dedication to helping clients navigate complex tax issues in ways that optimize outcomes while ensuring compliance.
