GSCPA’s 2020 Public Service Award Presented to Sean Taylor

Sean Taylor, Managing Partner of Smith & Howard, was recently named the recipient of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants’ 2020 Public Service Award. According to the GSCPA, the annual Public Service Award recognizes a member who has distinguished himself or herself in public service activities at the local, state, regional or national level. GSCPA said it was honored to present Taylor, a long-time member of the GSCPA who served on the inaugural GSCPA Leadership Academy, with the award. Taylor’s passion for service is reflected in both his professional and personal life. DOL Clarifies Effective Date of Certain Provisions of FFCRA

According to information on the U.S. Department of Labor's (DOL) website,  the paid leave provisions of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA),  which includes the Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act and the Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act, will become effective on Wednesday, April 1, 2020. Additionally, the DOL announced in a Field Assistance Bulletin that there will be a temporary non-enforcement  period of FFCRA from March 18 through April 17. During this grace period, no enforcement actions will be taken against private or public employers for non-compliance as long as they are able to show that they have made "reasonable, good faith efforts to comply with the Act." This means: Any violations are remedied as soon as is practical. The violations were not made willfully. The employer must send written notification to the DOL stating it will comply with the Act in the future. The DOL will begin...

The Act guarantees free testing for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), establishes emergency paid sick leave, expands family and medical leave, enhances unemployment insurance, expands food security initiatives, and increases federal Medicaid funding. The Act includes up to 80 hours of emergency paid sick leave for workers who are unable to work while they are sick or complying with COVID-19 restrictions or caring for school age children due to the closure of schools or child care facilities, as well as paid family and medical leave that employees will be able to use to care for family members (not for personal illness) for up to 12 weeks. On March 18, Governor Brian Kemp announced that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has given Georgia an official statewide disaster declaration due to the COVID-19 pandemic, paving the way for small businesses in all 159 counties to apply for much-needed financial assistance. Smith & Howard is honored to have been named one of the Top Tax Firms in the nation by Forbes. In December 2019, Forbes announced its first ever “Best Tax and Accounting Firms” list. The list of the most recommended firms for tax and accounting services in the U.S. was created through a partnership with market research company Statista.
