Non-Profit Industry Update: Private SchoolsEnrollment at US Private Schools Climbs Over Past Decade - US private schools have been enjoying a decade-long enrollment increase, as the number of students attending them rose 11.9 percent from 1995 to 2005. Two factors leading to the increasing enrollment are more financial aid for lower-income students and national policy issues surrounding vouchers. The rise in private school enrollment is simultaneous with decreasing enrollment in some public school districts. On a related note, school funding was high on many candidates’ agendas in the 2006 election; New York gubernatorial candidate Eliot Spitzer came out in support of tax credits (instead of vouchers) as a way for state government to assist parents with private school tuition costs.
